Early years
Lear was born in New Haven, Connecticut. His parents were a traveling salesman named Hyman “Herman” Lear and Jeanette “Seicol” Lear.
Claire Lear Brown was his younger sister (1925–2015). Lear grew up in Connecticut in a Jewish family and had a Bar Mitzvah. His mother was born in Ukraine, and his father was born in Russia.

Career
Lear worked in public relations after the end of World War II. Uncle Jack was the reason he chose that line of work: “Jack was my dad’s brother, and every time he saw me, he gave me a quarter. He worked as a press agent, which made me want to do the same. That was the only person I could look up to. So all I wanted to be when I grew up was a guy who could give a nephew a quarter.” Lear decided to move to California to start over in public relations. He drove across the country with his young daughter.
On his first night in Los Angeles, Lear walked into the 90-seat theater-in-the-round Circle Theater off Sunset Boulevard and saw a performance of Major Barbara by George Bernard Shaw. Sydney Chaplin, who was the son of actors Charlie Chaplin and Lita Grey, was in the play. Alan Mowbray and Dame Gladys Cooper were sitting in front of him. Chaplin performed after the show was over.
Lear’s first cousin Elaine was married to a man named Ed Simmons and lived in Los Angeles. Elaine wanted to become a comedy writer. Simmons and Lear worked together for a company called The Gans Brothers to sell furniture door-to-door. Later, they sold family photos door-to-door. During the 1950s, Lear and Simmons wrote comedy sketches for Martin and Lewis, Rowan and Martin, and other shows that were shown on TV. They often wrote for Martin and Lewis when they were on the Colgate Comedy Hour. In 1953, Billboard magazine said that Lear and Simmons were guaranteed a record-breaking $52,000 each to write for five more Martin and Lewis appearances on the Colgate Comedy Hour that year. In an interview with Vanity Magazine in 2015, Lear said that Jerry Lewis had hired him and Simmons to write for Martin and Lewis three weeks before their first show on the Colgate Comedy Hour in 1950. In 1986, Lear also said that he and Simmons had been The Martin and Lewis Show’s main writers for three years.
In 1954, Lear was hired as a writer to save the new Celeste Holm CBS sitcom Honestly, Celeste!, but the show was canceled after only eight episodes. After Nat Hiken left as the show’s director, he became the producer of NBC’s short-lived (26 episodes) sitcom The Martha Raye Show. Lear also wrote some of the opening monologues for the 1956–1961 TV show The Tennessee Ernie Ford Show. In 1959, Lear made his first TV show, a half-hour western called The Deputy for Revue Studios. It starred Henry Fonda.
