On Saturday, September 24, the Department of Transportation (DOTr) announced that Alberto “Bert” Suansing, a former head of the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB), had passed away. Suansing served as chairman of the LTFRB. There has been no disclosure of the decedent’s actual cause of death.

Former Secretary of Transportation Arthur Tugade referred to his predecessor as a “wonderful friend and great colleague” who had “a heart in public service.”

Bautista and the entire staff, officers, and sectors of the Department of Transportation (DOTr) send our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of Mr. Alberto ‘Bert’ Suansing,” said Jaime J. Bautista, the Secretary of the Department of Transportation. The Director of Training posted it on Facebook. “He was an extraordinary leader who devoted his life to serving the people. Mr. Suansing was one of those who was essential in advocating for the welfare of road transport stakeholders, as he was an advocate for road safety.

In a statement that was released on Saturday, the DOTr broke the news that Suansing had passed away. The agency also expressed its condolences to Suansing’s family and acknowledged the achievements that the departed former LTO chief had made to the government and to public service.

In a post made to Facebook on the same day, his son Alan revealed the news of his father’s passing.
In addition to his work as a licensed engineer, Suansing served as the former chief of the Land Transportation Office (LTO) during the Arroyo administration, the former chair of the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board, and a consultant of the Toll Regulatory Board and the Department of Transportation during the Duterte administration. All of these positions were held during Suansing’s tenure in the Philippines.
In his role as secretary-general of the Philippine Global Road Safety Partnership, he was also well-known for his work to improve road safety in the Philippines. He frequently delivered rousing seminars on the potentially lethal consequences of breaking traffic laws.

Bob Valera, the deputy director for law enforcement at the LTO, said with AutoFun Philippines that former LTO chief Suansing was modest, quiet, and full of wisdom during his time in that position.
Valera added in a text message that “he genuinely grasped his obligations as Assistant Secretary and guided the office towards being attentive to the demands of our clients.” Valera was referring to the man who held the position of Assistant Secretary. Even after he was hired as a consultant at the Department of Transportation, I recall him phoning me whenever he needed assistance with LTO-related matters. He will be greatly missed by all.

Lawyer Sophia San Luis, executive director of the advocacy legal company ImagineLaw, referred to Suansing as a trustworthy road safety voice who assisted the group with their lobbying for speed limits. Suansing was also a member of the group.
She told AutoFun Philippines in a text message that “He did not just comprehend the social dynamic of road safety.” “He did not just understand the social dynamic of road safety.” “He also grasped the science underpinning road safety and the health aspect of it, and he campaigned for a deeper knowledge of this research.” It is upsetting to learn about his passing.

Meanwhile, Robby Consunji, a trustee of the Automobile Association of the Philippines, expressed to AutoFun Philippines that he is looking forward to working with Suansing on a wide variety of automotive-related topics. Suansing is expected to take on a leadership role in the association.
Consunji expressed his sorrow about Suansing’s demise in a post he made on Facebook on September 23, 2022. The post also highlighted the many roles Suansing played both in the public and private sectors.
